Neighborhood Celebrates Its Rich Culture and History

June 4, 5 and 6 marks the 31st annual Art Walk in Historic Little Italy in Cleveland, OH. Every year the merchants entertain visitors from all over the US with the city’s first Art Walk and one of the regions most famous art exhibits. This year Little Italy is proud to host a Venetian Carnival featuring the students from local schools. In addition to over 100 artist exhibits, live entertainment and the incredible restaurants, bars and bakeries, Mayfield Rd and Murray Hill will be brightly filled with students parading in period Venetian masks and costumes depicting the historic Venetian Carnival, Commedia dell’Arte. Theater, and sidewalk activities around this magical reenactment will be an exciting addition to celebrate the neighborhood’s rich culture.

In the mid 1800s an Italian sculpture Joseph Carrabelli, began his famous granite and marble works at the top of the ‘hill’ on Mayfield Rd. The area between the railroad and the top of the ‘hill’ became home to Carrabelli and the many Italian families that came to Cleveland to work and Little Italy was born. Today the traditions hold strong with the rich cultural heritage and the spirit of artistry that Joseph Garabelli began over 130 years ago. Over 20 galleries, 15 restaurants, many professional-service businesses and two schools thrive in this village. The Lyceum and the Montessori school at Holy Rosary, as part of their curriculum, studied with professional artisans and historians and residents about the fascinating history of the Venetian Carnival, Commedia dell’Arte and the neighborhood. Mastering the art of Venetian mask-making, the students have worked for months to create this exciting celebration and create the realism of the Carnival for the City of Cleveland and visitors.

Venetian Carnival is sponsored by Neighborhood Connections.

About Little Italy Art Walk

The “Art Walk” term began in Little Italy over 30 years ago.  Many visitors ask us if we have an Art Walk once a month like many outdoor malls or newly gentrified neighborhoods.  The answer is, “NO.”  Little Italy’s Art Walks are major events that take months to create.  All Artist Studios open with world tour exhibits, Galleries host artists from all over the world in all artistic medium and the streets are teeming with activities and Affesco diners are entertained by traditional music.  There are three Art Walks in Little Italy every year.  The first weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) of June, October and December.  Valet parking is available throughout operating hours.
